Drone Delivery To Commence in Kisumu

Kisumu County is set to commence drone technology in the delivery of medical supplies and other essentials following progress of the MoU signed in February with Zipline Africa under the Lake Region Economic Bloc. To an area where health facilities need infrastructure upgrades, and medical supplies are inadequate, the initiative could save lives.

Zipline expects to deliver essentials like medicine, blood pints to hospitals on-demand, reducing delivery time from four hours by road to within 20 minutes, using drones that travel up to 100 km per hour at a time.

According to Governor Nyong’o, a drone centre is set to be opened officially in Chemelil and will also be used to transport fertilizers. The programme is expected to improve food security and enhance production of milk and meat. “Among others, we will leverage this new technology to improve our productivity in agriculture by enabling genetic improvement of local breeds at the animal reproduction centre in Chemelil.”

“Instead of having to transport your cow all the way to Chemelil, we can rear the bulls, produce semen then transport them by drones to Rodi Kopany in Homa Bay or Anding’o Opanga in Nyakach within minutes.”
