Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation Launched

Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation (KLDC) has now been launched and its first Board of Directors inaugurated. KLDC becomes the second parastatal in Kisumu County after KIWASCO. The KLDC as per its establishing statutes is a special purpose vehicle to manage and develop economic and social activities of the lakefront and mobilize resources for lakefront development projects.

In his address during the launch, H.E Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o said, “if we have a body that is occupied with lakefront activities like a corporation, then you have a medium through which people like boat makers can access capital.”

KURA will undertake the design, construction, and supervision of the infrastructure comprising of non-motorized traffic. The strolling path will also comprise 4-meter-wide tract, and 3-meter-wide walkways and an 8 meters paved carriage way. This is also inclusive of recreational facilities at strategic locations along the lake front barrier. Phase 1 of the project will cover 26 kilometers heading at Camp David Resort.

KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti stated that, “building of infrastructure is one on the most powerful tools in creation of jobs, and a plain field for all businesses.” Additionally, KURA will offer key support on urban roads infrastructure projects like feasibility studies and engineering designs, urban roads development and maintenance, walk ways and cycling paths, road drainage, and advanced traffic management systems.

What remains for the port to move forward is investments. “We are hoping that the next step from today is that we are able to get enough investments for the lake because that is what will bring transformation in this city and in this region,” Deputy Governor, Kisumu CountyH.E. The Chief guest during the launch was KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti. Named by the Governor as able to put all actors around the lake together is KLDC Chairperson Dr. Edward Ouko, former Auditor General. In attendance were Board Members of the KLDC, Hon Olago Oluoch, KURA Regional DG Mr. Richard Donde, Members of the County Assembly led by the Speaker Hon. Elisha Jack Oraro, CECMs, City Manager Mr Abala Wanga, representatives from Equity Bank, Kenya Railways, KWS, Kenya Ports Authority, Kibos Sugar, hoteliers to name but a few.
