Switch TV in partnership with the State Department for Shipping and Maritime, Kenya Maritime Authority and Kisumu County is hosting the Kisumu Maritime Summit, at Kisumu Impala Sanctuary this Tuesday, 26th October. This is a maritime summit to spur conversations on investment opportunities in the Lake Region.
The theme of the conference is Enhancing Maritime Opportunities with top level county and national executives in the panel namely Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and the Shipping and Maritime PS Dr. Nancy Karigithu.
Other panelists and keynote speakers include Chairman of the recently launched Kisumu Lakefront Development Corporation, Dr. Edward Ouko, Juvenal Shiundu, Chairman Kenya National Shipping Line Limited, and John Omingo, Director Maritime Trade and Investments at Kenya Maritime Authority.
During a Multi-Agency Action Plan meeting on Blue Economy in the Lake Victoria region with CS for Defence, Eugene Wamalwa at Acaciar Premier, Prof. Nyong’o described the summit as a cornerstone event where experts and leaders from the partnering organizations would share imaginative ideas to spur growth in Lake Victoria’s maritime industry.
In similar efforts, Kenya’s first Railway Marine School, the Railway Training Institute Kisumu is now host to R.T.I Marine School. This campus is dedicated to specialized marine and maritime education and training and also offer railway and transport logistics courses towards building capacity in the maritime industry and has capacity to admit 1,000 students.
The five-year master plan outlines 14 key pillars that focus on the protection of water towers, environmental protection and management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, lake transport, fishing and aquaculture. These interventions come at a time the National Government has pumped an estimated 3 Billion shillings to revamp the Kisumu Port and another 3.8 Billion shillings to rehabilitate the Nakuru-Kisumu Railway.
