Construction work at the Kisumu Railway Station is almost complete and the station is now operational with a ticket area, spacious passenger reception lounge, and functional public address system for the station announcer. Kenya Railways has hailed the terminus and the entire infrastructure as a game-changer that will unlock the economic potential of the region.
Kisumu Railway Station, which is under construction by Kenya Railways, is located along Busia road and is near Kisumu Cotton Mills (KICOMI). It’s 215km from Nakuru Railway Station. Recently, residents thronged the Kisumu Railway station to witness the maiden commuter train arrive with it Raila Odinga, Governors Anyang Nyong’o, Wycliffe Oparanya and James Ongwae.
According to the Station Master, “the hub has approximately 50,000 square feet of commercial space and is expected to provide passengers with an enhanced experience. The business complex will create business opportunities for SMEs and create over 2,000 jobs for the residents.”
The station will be a park and ride facility, taking into consideration the needs of pedestrians. Adjacent to it is the Uhuru Shopping Complex with 50,000 square feet of commercial rental space to enhance the economic opportunities for the residents living in the larger Lake Region Economic Bloc. This expansive warehouse model space which can be used for moving cargo, distribution and storage.
Commuters pay Sh600 fare on second class coaches from Nairobi to Kisumu and Sh2,000 on first class for the 12-hour journey. The train operates between 6 am and 6.45 pm, with a stopover in Nakuru.
