Nurturing The Next Olunga

Nurturing The Next Olunga

Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground is a great facility that can help our region access, nurture and export talent across the world. Just as Rift Valley is known for athletics, the Lakeside is known for football and rugby. How then do we inspire the next generation from the estate to Kisumu Boys High School to Kisumu Poly to playing at Safaricom Sevens and even the English Premier League?

What turns a competent athlete or player into an exceptional performer? First, the role of the coach is paramount for developing talent in youth athletes, and we can provide a definition of an effective coach that is broken down into three components: coach knowledge, coach contexts, and athlete outcomes.

If your child has this passion for sports, how do you stop that talent from going to waste? When kids are plating out there, you’re looking at their jumping, their throwing, their catching. By observing, you may notice that there’s a commitment to what they want to do and they’re able to take. So, parents offer several types of support for their children including emotional, informational, tangible support and companionship.

There are sports opportunities in our Kenyan Premier League (KPL) from Kisumu Rugby Football Club, Gor Mahia, Kisumu All Stars aka Otenga and estate clubs like Nyalenda, Kibuye, Kisumu Central, Korowe, and so on. Football clubs will always be in existence. Needed to bridge this gap is more academies to absorb our pool of talent.

Identifying and Nurturing Young Sporting Talent in Kisumu

Turn Pro Academy is one such example of a soccer academy that has the aspiration of discovering, nurturing, developing and enhancing growth of potential talent in football through various youth training programs. As a result, that child will end up being a better player in local leagues to the levels of stars like Mike Okinyi, Origi, Olunga, Owira, Joash Onyango and many others.

Among soccer academies that are doing incredibly well, Turn Pro exists to ensure the development of all –rounded young football professionals with the ability to keep the football game more vibrant than ever before. Turn Pro Academy seeks to uplift football standards in Kisumu County with an emphasis on the youth at various age groups and gender.

In order to achieve these goals, Turn Pro Academy has structured its calendar as per the Kenyan school calendar, carrying out trainings in the weekends and holidays. Equally, emphasis is placed on dedicated professional coaches who handle these children at a tender age of between 5 to 16- year-olds and are responsible in developing their talents.

Besides football, the academy has developed several programs that impart life skills, mentorship and enforcing morals to the youth with a message of hope to be and live the professional life. The end result is not only developing football talents, but also to produce all-round football stars. The academy can also offer suggestions for how you as a parent can support your children based on the type of sport in which they are engaged.
