Uhuru Launches Kisumu Railway Station

President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially opened the new ultra-modern Kisumu Railway Station. The station, constructed as part of rehabilitation works of the Nakuru-Kisumu railway and re-introduction of passenger service on the route, is now operational with a ticket area, spacious passenger reception lounge, and functional public address system for the station announcer.

According to the Station Master, “the hub has approximately 50,000 square feet of commercial space and is expected to provide passengers with an enhanced experience. The business complex will create business opportunities for SMEs and create over 2,000 jobs for the residents.

Located on Busia Road next to Kisumu Cotton Mills (KICOMI), Kenya Railways has hailed the terminus and the entire infrastructure as a game-changer that will unlock the economic potential of the region.

With schools re-opening, this move could see students benefit from a package introduced by the Kenya Railways with two trains departing from Kisumu to Nairobi this Tuesday at 5pm. Tickets are available at Nairobi Central Central, Nakuru Station and the new Kisumu Railway Station.

Expressing optimism that the rail transport will boost Kisumu’s status as an economic hub in the western region, President Kenyatta pointed out that the restoration of the rail transport in Kisumu will not only lower the cost of ferrying goods along the line but also stimulate the growth of industries that will create the much needed jobs for the youth. The President emphasized the importance of infrastructure in accelerating development, boosting economic growth and improving the lives of Kenyans.
“Because of this rail, the cost of travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu will reduce. Also the cost of transporting goods from Mombasa to Kisumu will reduce and that is of benefit to the people,” said President Kenyatta
Later, President Kenyatta officially opened the Dada Export Processing Zone Limited, a garment manufacturing factory for the export market that will create hundreds of jobs for Kisumu residents. Recently, residents thronged the Kisumu Railway station to witness the maiden commuter train arrive with it Raila Odinga, Governors Anyang Nyong’o, Wycliffe Oparanya and James Ongwae. As well, the President commissioned the rehabilitated Nakuru Railway Station in Nakuru City.
